We absolutely recommend renting your first student instrument, and most music educators agree. It's not uncommon for students to switch from one instrument to another early in their journey. While a student may start with a trumpet or violin, they might find that they prefer to play the trombone or viola instead!

No store in the Guitar Center chain will buy a broken guitar unless it's a very valuable instrument, even broken—e.g., a pre-war Martin D-28 that needs the bridge re-glued. You can advertise it on Craigslist. List everything you know about the make, model, and what's broken on it.

Expect to spend between $5 and $30 for guitar strings regardless of model or style. If you are not obsessed with the best guitar strings, any old brand of electric guitar string will be fine - just remember the gauge, or the string sizes. Guitar strings are an essential guitar accessory.
